“Important Information for Breeding Process”

Evidence of estrus “being in season” is the crucial period for your Schnauzer to be breed. The evidence of this is the sole responsibility of the owners. Therefore if intending to breed you must be observant of the first sign of a thin red discharge, which normally increases for about 7-9 days; it then changes color to a thin yellowish stain-or no notable discharge-free of blood. That will last for 4-7 days. Simultaneously, there is swelling of the vulva, the exterior portion of the females’ reproductive tract; the soft flabby vulva indicates her readiness’ to mate. During this period the 2nd week her ovulation (throwing eggs) occurs. Normally I breed on 9th, 11th & 13th days of her cycle. Your female (bitch) must be presented for boarding on night of 8th day of her cycle. At that time a decision will be made between breeder and owner if a natural breeding is possible or if artificial insemination is needed. AI is normally needed if female is over 4 lbs to several inches taker than male. Owner of female may be present at the first AI session. Female is to board from evening of the 8th day thru night of 13th day - OR- must be presented three times to stud on 9th, 11th & 13th day, if not boarding at Lit’l Bit of Heaven. Each visit she will need to be left for a period of 1½ hrs, without the presence of her owner.  Since your female is being bred to a proven stud if she does not throw eggs during her cycle she will not conceive.

If breeding does not result in pregnancy, or if only one puppy is born this female will receive a repeat breeding on next heat cycle. A fee of $75.00 will be charged for repeat breeding when only one puppy was produced from first breeding. You will not be charged the $75.00 if she did not conceive on the first breeding. The 2nd breeding is to take place within 220 days of failed conception. A written statement on your Vet’s letterhead is required from licensed Vet stating status of pregnancy. This statement must be presented to Lit’l Bit of Heaven via mail or e-mail if additional breeding is desired.
